Movie Review: Imitation Game (Kathy Lew)
In term 4, CDS Newsletters would like to recommend a movie called Imitation Game, which was released on the 17th of February. This movie is a historical thriller directed by Norwegian director Morten Tyldum, who also directed Headhunters in 2011. It was also nominated in eight different categories for the 87th Academy Awards, showing its commercial success world-wide. Historical films based on the biography of famous historical figures are not atypical. Not only do they honor the contributions made to the world, but also criticize mistakes made in the past.
The plot revolves around a group of British cryptanalyst trying to solve the Enigma code during the war between Britain and Germany in order to be victorious. The movie takes place during the World War II, when Britain declared war on Nazi Germany. The main character of this movie is a British mathematician and cryptanalyst, Alan Turing.
Imitation Game attracted the audience even before it was actually released in the theaters because of its casting of famous actors.
The movie starred Benedict Cumberbatch, a widely loved British actor, as Alan Turing, the main character, and Keira Knightley, a renowned English actress, as his fiancée.
With its profound plot, the movie increased the audiences’ anticipation even more and their needs to watch a good movie. More than seventeen hundred thousand people had visited the theater to watch this movie within a month in South Korea, rating the movie 8.72 out of maximum of 10.
Although the movie was a historical film about World War II, it was more than just war. It showed Alan Turing mentally growing up from a socially awkward, individualistic person to a man who tries to understand others and work with them as a team.
Imitation Game may not be a movie worth watching in the IMAX theaters because there are no suspenseful, eye-catching war scenes. However, the movie itself is definitely more than worthy of watching to honor the contribution he made to end the World War II.

Restrauant Review: Jeil Je Meun-So (Soo Ji Seo)
We have all heard about the sushi buffet where we have rotating rail of dishes that we can choose from. Yet, we also have Jeil Je Meun-so, the Shabu Shabu Buffet, which we can choose different noodles and meat in the rotating rail of dishes.
It is a franchised restaurant located in several places including Yeoido IFC Mall, Apgujung, and much more. Especially in IFC Mall people line up for at least 30 minutes to get in. It is one of the popular noddle places in Seoul. The price varies by menu but the Shabu Shabu Buffet is 22,000 won during weekdays and 27,000 won for weekends.
There are various dishes that people can choose from. Also there are different types of noodles that you can choose for different soup such as udon-meun, Soba-meun, rice noodle and So-meun. There are also different Japanese dish such as Udon with pan-fried Beef and Vegetables, Grilled Pork Belly, Udon Salad and much more.
The cost ranges from 9,000 won to about 30,000 won. The especially popular and recommended menu item is the Shabu Shabu Buffet. The dish itself is creative and people could freely choose and taste different noodles and meat. Also paying certain amount can get you as much serving size as you want.
The soup has a deep aroma and blended taste and the noodle has its freshly handmade texture. This restaurant is also known for using fresh and healthy ingredients, which they expose in their cooking in the buffet. This restaurant is recommended for any people who love noodles or love trying new and creative style of eating!

Music Review: "Here's to the Zeroes" (Suzie Park)
Greatly underappreciated, Marianas Trench is definitely not one of the most prominent bands of the 21st century. Although being a rather minor band, its new digital single, “Here’s to the Zeroes” is a fresh, new sound that sends a strong critical message towards the superficial music industry of America: Choppy, Catchy, and Critical.
To first introduce the band; the leading vocal, Josh Ramsay, and three other members, first debuted in 2006, and has released three studio albums since then. With each album, the band has slowly lost its hardcore punk rock rhythm and has been transitioning into a pop rock genre with their most recent album, Ever After (2011).
Ironically enough, their latest single truly attests to how music can degenerate into mere hook songs. Ramsay derides the modern music culture of “auto-tunes” and “hash-tag anthems,” through a satirical song that incorporates nothing substantial but a catchy rhythm and repetitive chorus lines (as expected from the co-writer of the irritating hit song, “Call Me Maybe,” sang by Carly Rae Jepson).
The song stands for everything it disparages in its lyrics, and the band’s ability to effectively deliver the message with blunt lyrics and appealing tunes is why the band can be regarded as one of the hidden gems of the pop rock industry.
Their next album, Astoria, is expected to hit the stores in 2015, will hopefully carry the same powerful effect.

"Kill Me Heal Me" (Sooji Seo)
“Kill Me Heal Me” is a newly released Korean Drama on MBC broadcast station. This drama shows the trend of Korean drama of psychological disorders and understanding them in society. “Kill Me Heal Me” is about a man named Do-Hyun Cha who has a Dissociative Identity Disorder (D.I.D), more widely known as a Multiple Personality Disorder. Do-Hyun is a son of a second wife in the Myuong Sung Group and he is forgetful of his past traumatic memory. Perhaps his trauma caused him to have a monstrous disorder. The main female character, Li-jin Oh, becomes Do-hyun’s personal psychiatrist to cure his disorder. There are various mysteries and uncovered truths related to Do-hyun’s traumatic events that involves Do-hyun’s family.
Do-Hyun has six personalities within him including himself, Perry Park (bomb maker), Nana (a whiny baby), Yona-Ahn (Yosup’s Sassy twin sister) and Yosup-Ahn (suicidal) and Segi Shin (violent yet charismatic). This romantic comedy drama contains several humorous scenes portraying the different personalities.
One of the most attractive themes of the drama promotes understanding of a serious metal disorder, DID, and strives to express social acceptance and reasons for such a disorder. Of course there are many comical parts, but there are also serious and relatable scenarios. Ever thought of suffering from DID or acting to have it as a way of surviving this complicated society? Well then, just watch this drama and find out. You will become sure of how everyone has a different “identity” in different situations!

"Uptown Funk!" (Edward James Suh)
“Uptown Funk!” is a dance-pop/funk song produced by Mark Ronson, featuring Bruno Mars. The song was released last November and it reached rank 61 within 10 days, leading Ronson to his first entry to the Billboard Hot 100. Topping over Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me,” Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space,” and Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass,” “Uptown Funk!” reached the peak on its eighth week. Also, it has been a while since funk music ranked first place. In short, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars have made a phenomenon.
“Uptown Funk!” begins with a baritone voice, handclaps, and adds funky guitar riffs after two measures. I really like the introduction because it always makes me want to dance. I also like the fact that there is clear passion within the lyrics. However, the dance performance caught my most attention. “Don’t believe me just watch!” I got sucked into the music, as the song gives me a cue before entering chorus. The dance is easy and addictive; I can feel that Bruno Mars must have had fun coordinating the dance while directing the music video. Dear audience, what do you think of this music? I need no words to explain such a wonderful song, because everybody knows it. Now, let’s have some fun: say “uptown funk you up!”

"Spring Time" (Jenna Choi)
Movie Review: Interstellar (Risoo Kim)
In Term 2, I would like to recommend a movie called Interstellar.
I guess most of you have already heard of this movie, for it was the most popular film for the recent months. As the title already hints (since “stellar” means stars) Interstellar is a science fiction film that takes place outside of Earth’s orbit.
The plot revolves around astronauts who are desperate to find a new habitat planet that can replace the Earth, where people can no longer live.
Space movies are known to be crowd-pleasers due to their immense scale and expensive special effects. As a result, many directors and script writers have based their stories in outer space. However, I want like to point out that this movie is not mundane unlike several other monotonous movies that deal with the theme of space.
This movie attracted a lot of public attention even before the movie was released in theaters since Christopher Nolan directed the movie. Because Christopher Nolan was already an eminent film director for other movies such as Memento, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and Inception, many people had high expectations for this movie.
In addition, the cast members, Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, made those expectations even higher. Fortunately, Interstellar fulfilled most of the audiences’ anticipations. More than 600 million people have been to theater to watch this movie within seventeen days in South Korea.
In my personal opinion, I believe that the reason why this movie is a box office hit is because the story plot of this movie flows in a direction that no one can predict.
This movie is definitely worth watching in the theater. It is especially recommended to view this movie in the IMAX theaters. The film is presented in 4D theaters where the viewers an experience the realistic senses from the movie such as motion and sound.

Restaurant Review: My Ssong (Sooji Seo)
My SSong is a brunch restaurant in Cheongdamdong, Dosan Park area. The shop is open from 8am to 9pm on weekdays and weekends. The location is perfect for a brunch café since it is on a small European-style alleyway. The restaurant has been at the same place for more than ten years due to its positive reputation.
When one first enters the area, the restaurant feels like it belongs in Italy. The restaurant radiates peace and tranquility instead of the busy, strict air of a fancy restaurant. The setting of the restaurant is unique in that food is served in a buffet; their specialty is various Italian meals. Since the main menu is for brunch, the restaurant serves common morning dishes such as sandwiches, French toasts, English muffins, omelets, and egg benedicts. Even though the customers often enjoy the buffet brunch menu, they also come by to have coffee and dessert.
One of the dishes would be the Ragu Meatball Spaghetti. The sauce is rich and has the combination of a sour and salty taste. The sauce blends perfectly well with the vegetables inside, especially the thin mushrooms. Additionally, there are many remarkable side dishes and finger foods. There are at least five different types of dishes using egg as a main ingredient, garnished with delicious sauce and cheese.
Another popular menu is the Vongole Pasta. It is simple to make yet is one of the most favored by customers. The basic ingredients are garlic, white wine, black pepper, olive oil, and fresh clams. The olive oil and garlic have to be well blended in order to give the best quality taste.
In the desert section, the cranberry and caramel carrot cake as well as the red velvet cake are some of the restaurant's delicious specialities.
Most of the customers reviewed, “The cakes are to die for!!” One of the reasons for this could be that the homemade cream layers add a rich sweet taste to the desserts. The cream also blends nicely with either the carrot or cranberry cream.
This restaurant is recommended for those who enjoy brunch and desert cafes. Also it would be a favorable place to have comfortable meetings due to its home-like atmosphere. Although the location is remote from the central part of the Cheongdamdong, it is worth trying for its unique set of menus!

All About That Bass (Edward James Suh)
“All About That Bass” is a pop song composed and performed by Meghan Trainor, a 20-year-old singer, songwriter, and producer. It was released on June 2, 2014, and debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number 84 after about a month. On September 20, 2014, Trainor’s “All About That Bass” ascended to the peak of the chart.
The rhythm of the song itself is addicting, particularly the repetitive line, “I’m all about that bass / About that bass, no treble,” at the beginning and at the melody line in chorus. However, if you are a critical person who also listens to the lyrics, you will realize that the lyrics are more literally relevant to feminists. Trainor’s lyrics address the need for girls to not conform to the “perfect” body image that so-ciety enforces but to be proud of one’s own body. Instead of following the crowd, the song encourages the listeners to be proud of who they are.
Some critics say that Trainor plagiarized six-teen measures from the chorus of one of Korea’s pop songs, “Happy Mode” by Koyote. Whether or not it was a violation of copyright or an act of coincidence, it is one of inevitable criticisms one receives when creating music.
Dear audiences, what do you think about this review? I will give this uprising song a 4 out of 5. Do not think of the song’s lyrics in a literal fashion. Think of how the lyrics are related to yourself, and you will realize why this song was at the peak of the Billboard Hot 100.

Divergent: Movie Review (Risoo Kim)
The movie I want to introduce to you for is Divergent, which is a movie based on a popular novel. Directed by Neil Burger, Divergent was released in 2014. The main actors and actresses are Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Ahsley Judd. The main actors and actresses are Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Ashley Judd. This movie, with its detailed novel-based plot, skillful acting crew, and important societal messages, leaves people in deep thought afterwards.
If you enjoyed the movie The Hunger Games directed by Gary Ross, I am sure that you are going to love this movie as well. Because I do not want to spoil the movie plotline for those who haven’t been able to watch it yet, I will only briefly introduce the overall setting of the movie.
Basically, the movie takes place in a dystopian society, specifically post-apocalyptic Chicago. In this community, all the people are divided into five factions based on human virtues such as intelligence, bravery, selflessness, peacefulness, and honesty. The ostensible reason for the five-faction system is to keep the balance of society, although in reality the rigid societal structure restricts the people from engaging in any free activities. The main character, Beatrice, is classified as a “divergent,” meaning that she does not belong to any of the factions. A divergent is hard to predict and control and is thus considered a lethal threat to society. Thus, the movie is centered on Beatrice, the divergent girl, who is fighting to survive against the strict social system.
I believe the movie will definitely make you think more, not only about the current society we are in, but also about yourself. Even though I do not prefer to watch science fiction movies, I was really impressed by the story of Divergent, so much that Divergent has suddenly become one of my favorite movies of all time. Thus, even if you are not a big fan of science fiction/action films, I strongly recommend you to watch this movie.
There is also a sequel, Insurgent, coming out in 2015. For those who cannot wait that long, you can read the original novel version of Insurgent before watching the movie.

Restaurant Review: h'450 (Sooji Seo)
You are probably wondering why the name of the restaurant is h’450. This title actually represents the street address of its location. It is an Italian restaurant owned by Samsung. The restaurant is located in Apgujung station, close to exit 1. The business hours are from 10:00 to 22:00 through the whole week.
The restaurant has a classical yet home-like environment with an open kitchen and a wide-open structure. There is a coffee maker next to a cake stand that displays beautiful cutlery. There are even separate rooms for private meetings and a free lounge with a comfortable couch.
Generally, the restaurant menu contains appetizers, pasta, salad, pizza, beverages, and deserts. The restaurant provides a pleasant service and is a great place to casually eat a meal with friends or family.
The two most well-known menus of this restaurant are the Oven Baked Ragu Sauce Pasta and the Spinach Shrimp Pasta. The Ragu Pasta has a crispy taste of mozzarella cheese with well-blended tomato sauce. It contains various healthy ingredients such as mushroom, beef, zucchini, and carrot. The taste of the pasta is rich and creamy with a slight texture of grinded meat in its tender sauce.
Another popular menu, the Spinach Shrimp Pasta, contains basil and big shrimp with a creamy spinach sauce. It is well-garnished with green vegetables and sprinkle of cheese. The portion size for both dishes is appropriate. After the main meals, there are also delicious desserts. The most popular dessert at h’450 is carrot cake, which has a sweet creamy texture well-blended with caramel and bread.

MAGIC! -Rude (Edward James Suh)
It has been about a decade since a reggae song has topped Billboard Hot 100. It has also been a while since a Canadian musician took over the list. In 2006, a band named Nickelback was the first Canadian band to make it to the peak. Two years ago, Carly Rae Jepsen rose to the summit. Then, on July 26, 2014, a four-membered Canadian band MAGIC! created yet another miracle with their reggae song called “Rude.”
How is “Rude” so famous? Perhaps it is the work of magic by the plain but alluring beat of reggae music: a simple four beat done by groovy Jamaican percussions. In addition, MAGIC! mashed reggae with pop, which is a very familiar genre in the world. In fact, such innovation and familiarity will catch your ears easily. The lyrics of the song tell quite a story as well. In each verse, a man asks a girl’s father for his marriage blessing, but the father rejects him. In every chorus, the man says, “Why you gotta be so rude? / Don’t you know I’m human, too?” His voice contains sorrow yet a comical edge because he is planning to “marry her anyway” in spite of the father’s rudeness.
Dear listeners, what do you think?
I will give it a plausible, honest, 5 out of 5. Give me five, MAGIC!

Movie Review: Maleficent (Risoo Kim)
For the last movie review of this year, I watched Maleficent, which was directed by Robert Stromberg! Well, for the people who are curious about its plotline, I will just tell you that Maleficent is a remake version of the classic Sleeping Beauty. But, there is a clear difference between Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty. While Sleeping Beauty’s protagonist is the princess, Aurora, Maleficent’s protagonist is the witch named Maleficent. So, in other words, Maleficent is a story from the perspective of the witch. As some of you may already know, the meaning of the word, Maleficent, means “doing evil or harm.” This will give you the impression that Maleficent is a malicious witch. However, to share a little more about the story, she is more than just an extremely harmful witch who loves to do evil deeds. There is an additional story about Maleficent that explains why she needed to turn to be evil. This story plotline is unique to this movie and will not be seen anywhere else.
Oh! I forgot to introduce the actresses in Maleficent! Angelina Jolie plays Maleficent and Elle Fanning, who is the sister of Dakota Fanning, performs the role of Aurora. I am pretty sure that you are more tempted to watch this movie now that you have heard about the cast members, right? J Also, the CG graphics are wonderful! Some people around me even say that the graphic was similar to the movie, Avatar. I guess even the boys would enjoy this movie because there are quite a lot of action scenes. This movie is distinctly different from other original Disney movies. I hope every one of you can spend the wonderful summer vacation by watching a lot of enjoyable movies! See you on September!

Food Review: Café Talk (Angie Lee)
Over the past decade, coffee shops have taken over the streets throughout South Korea. It’s impossible to walk around any neighborhood without running into a Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, or Tom and Toms. Competition for customers nowadays has become so high that entrepreneurs have begun to try various methods to attract more customers. As a result, themed cafes have become extremely popular.
“Café Talk” is located in Shinnonhyun and is one of the cozier coffee shops. As its name slightly hints, the café is filled with KakaoTalk emoticons. Café Talk boasts a huge collection of KakaoTalk emoticon dolls and various accessories. The customers not only can get drinks but also purchase cute items. Also, there are seats, both inside and outside of the café. There’s a huge yellow terrace outside of the café, which are beautifully decorated with adorable figures.
It has various snacks, drinks, and cakes. “Mango Talk,” “Berry Talk,” and “Cookie Talk,” which are the best-recommended drinks to order. They are smoothies served in yellow mug cups with KakaoTalk emotions. I especially liked the “Mango Talk” drink; the mangos were incredibly fresh and were mouth-watering, but they were a bit too sweet.
Overall, the interior of the café was astonishing. The decorations were appealing and delightful. One thing that was a little disappointing was that although they were selling various items related with KakaoTalk characters, there weren’t any menus that actually associated with those characters. It would have been better if they had KakaoTalk character waffles or cakes! But nonetheless, this café is worth while to visit!

Cartoon: Summer Vacation (Jenna Choi)

Summer’s Up! (Sooji Seo)
It’s almost towards the middle of June, and all high school students wait for one particular day—the start of summer vacation. Students are excited to go shopping, go out with friends, meet up with their families, and catch up on their long lost hours of sleep. Some students may be busy going to summer school, doing extra studies to prepare for college, or studying for next year’s curriculum. But the best way to spend the summer is to go on a trip. Students are often recommended to travel overseas before enrolling to a college. This is because traveling gives education that is not taught in schools.
Traveling overseas gives students tremendous experience and one is able to learn about a new culture. Traveling is not only a task to enjoy but to acutely experience different aspects of culture. For instance, a student may have read about Venice, the popular trading post Chinese Silk Road. At one and of the student is not aware of the actual images and scenes that took place. If the student travels to Venice and sees the actual location and observes its traditions and characteristics, the student can to relate the information learned from books to real life. This can only be done through experience! Thus, tasting food, observing different races and styles of clothes, all adds to experiencing a different culture.
Traveling abroad allows students to broaden their horizons to a more global perspective. The 21st century is a highly globalized world; the media and many careers evolve around worldwide topics. Traveling enables students to understand different aspects of countries taking place via a global medium. It is likely that students will be able to meet a wide range of diverse people in college or their working environment. When traveling abroad, students learn how to deal with different situations and how to communicate with people who speak different languages or follow a different tradition. Therefore, this develops the students’ insights and skills to value the unique characteristics of certain places and people. In this way, students can prepare themselves for college by dealing with a diverse population and understanding unique qualities of different individuals.
Traveling also helps students to learn more about themselves. Often times, in a new place, students learn to adapt in a new environment and learn how to become independent. Traveling is a significant experience that motivates students to learn about themselves and find their identity. Although the idea of developing oneself in a foreign country rather than at home may sound ironic, traveling gives students the opportunity to discover different parts of themselves that they never have seen before. The foreign environment and may culture can cause people to change.
Places like Rome and Italy are famous for their arts and history; Geneva, Switzerland is well known for its global center and China is popular for its ancient history like the Great Walls that they built during the Qin Dynasty. Going to such places helps students to think about their future career. Some students may realize that they want to be an architect looking at the beautiful buildings in Italy. Some may be excited to visit Geneva since they are interested in the United Nations or interested in learning new languages. All of these factors contribute to developing a student’s thoughts and future through experiences that are distinct from their ordinary routines.
Traveling does not have to be expensive. The key concept of traveling is to go on an adventure, breaking the ordinary routine to motivate students to gain new experiences. It can be as easy as going downtown, to places that students have never been to before. For example, students living in the busy city who also experience its competitive, hardworking life can also visit different rural places within their own country. Walking on a field or breathing in fresh air can all be considered as new experiences. The adventure can begin from a place close to where the students are already at. Although there are numerous tasks for busy high school students to do, traveling is essential because it teaches unique subjects which can only be pertained through experience and by going away from home.
Summer is an exciting time of the year. It is up to all students to decide how they will use their time and shape their future. Traveling is definitely a great way to enjoy the break as well as gain meaningful experiences.
The same amount of time is given to each individual! But it is irreversible. So start your summer plans now!

Food Review: Yaong’s Chinese Restaurant (Jenna Choi)
Main Menu
The first dish I tried was the tuna salmon salad with carrots and cabbages. It had tuna salmon rosettes, a bit frozen on the salad, but decorated beautifully. The black sesame dressing tasted great, a bit crunchy and nutty.
The second dish was a spicy shrimp. It was not too spicy and also had a sweet taste to it. The nachos and the shrimps tasted great together, crunchy and smooth at the same time. However, you should watch out for the chili peppers if you do not enjoy eating spicy foods. |
The last dish on the table was stir-fried vegetables with flower breads. This was familiar because CDS had provided a similar menu item before for lunch. However, it tasted vastly different from our school food: The vegetables also contained potato, chili peppers and pork, the vegetables tasted great with the bread because the bread had a slightly plain flavor. To enjoy the food, you should try and wrap the vegetables in a piece of bread ripped out of the loaf.

Movie Review: Miss Granny (Risoo Kim)
If I were to ask you, who do you usually want to spend time watching movies with, how would you answer? I am guessing that most of you would reply that you would most likely want to spend that time with your “friends.” However, I can definitely say that watching movies with your family is also very enjoyable and will allow yourselves to spend a memorable time together. Thus, in Term Four, I want to recommend a movie that you can see with your whole family, which is Miss Granny!
Before I talk about the story’s plotline and why I want to recommend this movie as a great family film, let me introduce it very briefly. Obviously, Miss Granny is a Korean movie, produced by the director Dong-hyuk Hwang. Miss Granny is especially praised for its outstanding acting performances by actors and actresses such as Eun-gyung Shim, Mun-hee Na, Dong-ill Sung, and Jinook Lee. In addition, the movie’s original soundtrack is also attracting the attentions of many viewers.
Now the plotline for the movie is quite simple. Basically, the movie is about one grandmother, who feels as though she is continuously becoming more isolated from her family, as she ages. Her worries are proven right when her family decides to send her to an old folk’s home. But on her way to being sent off, she is magically given back her chance at another period of youth when she is transformed to being 25 years old. With another chance at her life in the 20s, she swears that she won’t let it go to waste and decides to live it to the fullest.
To make sure that I don’t give spoilers about the movie, I won’t give away the details, but I will just tell you that you will certainly feel the importance of love between families throughout the entire film, which makes it such a great production to watch together with the ones you love. Perhaps you will learn to better understand your parents and grandparents after watching it. Even if the subject of this movie seems to be a bit too heavy at times, in the end it’s a film that will bring you both tears and laughs. If you have not watched this movie with your family before, I encourage you to give it a try! :)

Dark Humor
1. A funeral service is held for a woman who just passed away. As the pallbearers carry the casket out, they accidentally bump into a wall. They hear a faint moan. They open the casket and find that the woman is actually alive. She lives for ten more years and then dies. They have another funeral for her. At the end of the service, the pallbearers carry out the casket. As they are walking, the husband cries out, "Watch out for the wall!"
2. A cop shows up to a man’s house. He asks to see a picture of the man’s wife. The man is confused but goes and grabs a photograph of her. The cop looks at it and tells the man, “Well sir, it looks like your wife has been hit by a bus.” And the man says, “I know, but she’s a really good cook.”
3. Three friends die in a car accident and attend an orientation in Heaven. An angel asks, "When you are in your casket and your friends and family are mourning you, what would you like to hear them say about you?" The first guy says, "I would like them to say that I was a great doctor and a loving family man." The second guy says, "I would like them to say that I was a caring husband and a schoolteacher who made a huge difference to kids." The last guy says, "I would like them to say—LOOK, he's moving!"

Worst Pranks of All Time (Edward J. Suh)
1. Hijinks of Hussein and Son Hussein and his sons were ruthless, powerful dictators, but they make people of Iraq laugh every April Fool’s Day. On April 1, 1998 the Babil newspaper, owned by Hussein's son Uday, informed its readers that President Clinton had decided to lift sanctions against Iraq, only to admit later that it was just joking. One can imagine the knee-slapping guffaws when readers realized how they'd been taken for a ride. The laughs continued in 1999 when Uday mischeviously announced that the monthly food rations would be supplemented to include bananas, Pepsi, and chocolate. However, their repetition of ideas backfired, and the celebration of April Fool’s Day was banned in 2001.
2. Releasing the Prisoners…NOT! Imagine greeting your imprisoned family member who is going to set free from Romanian prison in April 2000. When you take a long journey and arrive at the prison in Romania to meet your family member, there is no one but words: “April Fool’s! No one’s being released!” Well, not a good idea. That person will find oneself lying at the hospital after a moment.
3. Fake Hanging Randy Wood’s marriage was over, but apparently he didn’t feel like a time to get divorced. He played a prank against his ex-wife. When she saw him hanging on the tree, she immediately dialed 911. However, when the emergency services came to rescue, he was alive, unharmed. That was when his prank got wrong; he almost paid up to $1,000 and a year in jail.
4. Fake Robbery Sitra Walker was an employee at a clothing store in Columbus, Ohio. She had only been working there for two weeks, but already she felt that she knew the manager well enough to joke around with him. So on April 1, 2003 she called him up at his home and told him that armed men were robbing the store. The manager immediately called the police, who promptly dispatched four cruisers. Minutes later Walker phoned the manager again and screamed 'April Fools'. Too late. When the police arrived moments later they weren't amused and charged her with inducing a panic. Walker's manager fired her.
5. Sign the people up for the Army Laughs all around when the military police shows up at your mark's door and he gets hauled off to the stockade for going AWOL.
So think, before you act.

History of April Fool’s Day (Daniel Choi)
During the continuous trail of stressful days, there is one day that most people, if not everyone, can relax and enjoy together lightheartedly: April Fool’s Day. On this day, it’s either trick or be tricked. We enjoy the day assuming that it is natural and acceptable to make up a fib. But, why do we lie? Why and how did April Fool’s Day begin? You probably don’t know and by the title of this article, must think that I will be answering it for you. Well, that’s too bad, because I won’t. Happy belated April Fool’s Day! But no, seriously, I won’t – well, not an exact answer anyway.
April Fool’s didn’t just happen out of the blue. There are several theories explaining the origin of this mysterious day. The most popular theory states that the French calendar changed to adjust the New Year from the beginning of April to the beginning of January, to match it with the Roman calendar. The change, however, was not spread quickly and it took time for people in the rural area to get informed. These people continued to celebrate New Year’s in April, and those were the ones referred to as the “April Fools.”
This theory, however, is flawed in that the French actually celebrated New Years at Easter, and the first of April is irrelevant to the event. Also, this does not explain how the tradition spread worldwide.
Another theory is offered by Joseph Boskin, a Professor Emeritus of American Humor at Boston University. He states that the holiday is rooted in a very famous historical prank. He explains that Roman jesters during the third and fourth century successfully petitioned the emperor to allow one of their groups to act as the emperor for one day. Constantine agreed and chose the first of April to be the day. This day has become April Fool’s Day and has been continued as tradition, till today.
As absurd the theories may sound, they are not proved nor disproved by any means. Researchers continue to search for the original foundation for the day. We hope it will be discovered one day, but until then, let’s just stick with whatever theory we think sounds correct. After all, it’s April Fool’s – we do what we want to do and we think what we want to think.

Movie Review: Frozen - "Happily Ever After" vs. Realism (Risoo Kim and Soo Jin Lee)
"For those of you who did not enjoy previous Disney movies for a variety of reasons, I am sure that you will love this one."
-Risoo Kim |
“Disney portrays true love in a dangerous way that might lead innocent children to understand love in an unrealistic manner.”
-Soo Jin Lee |
Did you watch “Frozen,” Disney’s latest movie? If you haven’t watched it yet, I will tell you the reasons why you need to watch it. I am full of confidence that I can persuade you to watch it, for “Frozen” is such a wonderful movie that it can appeal to anyone. For those of you who did not enjoy previous Disney movies for a variety of reasons, I am sure that you will love this one. “Frozen” demonstrates quite different aspects that can fully eliminate all the criticisms that Disney animation has received before.
First of all, the princess in the animation does not rely on the prince anymore, which means Frozen” breaks Disney’s long history of settings where the prince appears as the savior for the princess. In “Frozen,” one of the princesses, Anna, illustrates the aspects of an independent girl. When she feels like she is the one who is responsible for freezing the kingdom in eternal snow, she is determined to solve the problem on her own instead of waiting for a prince to appear and solve the problem. Not only is Anna independent, but her older sister Elsa is as well. She has suffered from the facts that her parents have passed away and that she cannot manage her ability to control snow and ice. However, she does not wait for a prince to help with her burden. She decides to bear all the hardships for citizens and her sister by herself. Therefore, the independent characteristics of the two heroines shouldn’t make the audience complain about the weak depiction of women in the film. Some people do not like Disney movies since they regard the love between the prince and the princess as too childish. Moreover, the princesses in Disney movies usually fall in love with the princes after knowing them for only a few days. However, “Frozen” suggests the deeper concept of “true love” through the characters. In “Frozen” true love does not exist between the princess and the prince. It provides a deeper meaning of love compared to previous animations, which allows audiences from all age groups to enjoy the film. As I do not want to spoil the climax of the movie, I will not tell how true love is presented in the story. I hope you can check it out by yourself. I thought the best part of the movie was the music. As “Frozen” melted the touching storyline into music pieces, the animation was like a piece of musical. The music helped the audiences to feel empathy towards the characters. This is even proven by the music charts in America and even within Korea where the OST songs from the movie have reached number one. Most people who watched “Frozen” (including me) find themselves humming the songs in the animation such as “Do you want to build a snowman?” and “Let it go.” “Frozen” is definitely worth watching, and I hope you can feel the heart-warming feeling that I felt while watching it! |
Disney, as usual, released a great film to appeal to our exhausted hearts. The new film, “Frozen,” is a story about two sisters, overcoming a problem together with the power of true love. Sounds heart-warming, huh? I beg to differ. Although the movie itself is a great film, “Frozen” is somehow adulterated.
The older sister, Elsa, has the ability to control ice and snow. The problem is that she can’t control it. (Isn’t that ironic?) Accidently, she ends up hurting her younger sister, Anna, when they are children. From that day forward, the king and the queen separate the sisters and erase Anna’s memory of her sister’s ability. They also forbid interaction with people outside the castle until Elsa can control her power. The movie seems to be making a serious claim here: that those who are different or dangerous should be isolated from society. A stupid but common Disney mistake – when in doubt, lock them up! Elsa’s power gets out of control when she is afraid. So the “great” solution of imprisoning Elsa ends up in an eternal blizzard for the castle. Another big mistake is that Elsa’s blood sister Anna is kept away from any knowing anything about her sister. If Anna knew anything about her sister from the beginning, no one would have had to suffer through the movie. Also, in Disney films, there seems to be a recurring theme that never seems to be forgotten. Love! The idea of true love sounds romantic and beautiful but how Disney portrays it is dishonest and unrealistic, as exemplified in this recent movie. First of all, Anna, desperate and sick for romance, falls in love with the first man she interacts with and agrees to marry him. They sing one duet about the most useless similarities they share with each other: having been neglected by their siblings and their love for sandwiches. Talk about true love. This can only be seen as a side effect a long period of childhood neglect and isolation. When Elsa refuses to give her blessing to the couple’s marriage, Anna doesn’t experience heartache from losing her true love. No, she meets another guy. It takes two days from when they meet for her to fall in love with him. A stranger she finds in the mountains who takes advantage of her sensitive emotions by going on an emotional two-day journey. In this way, Disney portrays true love in a dangerous way that might lead innocent children to understand love in an unrealistic manner. Love does not happen in one day. Even though you think it may be love at first sight, you should gather more proof and knowledge first. Furthermore, Disney always seems to associate “true love” with kissing. Elsa accidently freezes Anna’s heart with her magic. The only thing that could thaw her frozen heart is the true love. All the characters in “Frozen” interpret this act of “true love” as a kiss. But the true definition of true love does not necessarily have to be physically shown, like in Disney films. “Frozen” is an amazing movie and definitely worth watching. However, there are so many flaws in the movie. They say that this movie has grown significantly from the past, mixing in new feminist perspectives. However, Disney’s annoying habit in portraying the harsh reality of our modern world as a bird-chirping, sun shining, romantic world makes the movie a growing problem for every young audience member’s future. |

Food Review: Dinosaur Meat (Soo Jin Lee)
As a junior, I always feel the need for more protein. The piles of projects and homework assignments we students receive from the eight classes we take drains energy away from our bodies. And so what replenish this need for more energy? MEAT! Although Korea is full of restaurants that sell meat, as students, we don’t have the luxury of buying the expensive selections of meat that we want to eat. I know that not all of us like to spend so much money on food. So I would like to introduce to the student body a place where one can consume as much meat as you want, at the cheapest price.
If you live in Cheongna, you are in luck! Even if you don’t live in Cheongna, don’t be sad. Just grab your friends and go to Gongryeong Goggi. Don’t get confused by the title of the store (which translates directly to mean Dinosaur Meat). They are not selling dinosaur meat! I think the title can be interpreted to mean that you can eat as much as a carnivorous dinosaur… Gongryeong Goggi is a meat buffet where you get the privilege to devour different types of meat at a price less than 20,000 won! There are 8-10 types of meat that one can choose from. The diversity allows for satisfaction from people of all ages. If you ever rush to the meat stand and have trouble choosing which kind of meat to eat, just pile them all up. No problem, that’s what buffets are for!
The types of meat they sell here are great because there are side dishes that help you digest the grease. Gongryeong Goggi provides other side dishes such as bean paste soup, cold noodle, rice, and etc. These “Korean” side dishes go well with meat and add a fresh flavor to your tongue.
The restaurant is medium sized, but quite spacious. There are 15-20 tables to serve the customers. The waiters and waitresses are kind and friendly so you won’t end up complaining about the service. There’s also free coffee served from the vending machine after you’re done. Even though it’s from a vending machine, it’s rich mocha. No other restaurants offer these types of commodities. They usually offer milk coffee, which is too cheap for our taste. (AM I RIGHT?)
Gongryeong Goggi is a place where you, your friends and family, can all be carnivorous to one’s greatest desire without having to worry about the size of the check.

How to Survive Lunar Break (Soo Jin Lee)
This February, students were excused from school for two days to enjoy a nice, pleasant Lunar Vacation. However, what may be perceived as an innocent and fun ritual is actually a troublesome family gathering that every Korean is obligated to attend. Therefore, here are three important steps on how to avoid suffering too much during the next Lunar Break.
1. Never give your money (새뱃돈) to anyone. Even your parents or older siblings.
● Your parents will never give it back to you (I bet you know this from your own experience). In the case of your older sibling(s), there is a high possibility that they might trick you and take your money away (such as swapping the envelope or taking the money out from it). If you lose the money, you will have to wait until the next holiday so I suggest you bring your own bag instead of asking your family members to hold onto it.
2. Fight the temptation of greasy food
● Many of you (especially girls) may worry about how to resist the aroma of bulgogi and other greasy foods served on this day. Here are some tips you might find useful!
A. Don’t eat late
B. Drink lots of water
C. Don’t even think about desert! (*If you really are desperate for it, then go for green tea or low calorie fruits)
D. Eat vegetables (나물) first then eat carbohydrate-rich foods
3. Let it go!
● I don’t know about you, but my grandparents give me a lot of pressure about college. If you have relatives who annoy you with “life lectures” or you have annoying little cousins who you have to babysit, my tip for you would be to just let everything go. Pretend you are listening to them and play with the little pests. Then afterwards release your stress with your friends who might have had the same horrible experience as you.

History of Valentine's Day (Daniel Choi)
It’s February 14th, also widely known as Valentine’s Day. Some of the students, if not most, will prepare their chocolates for their lovers and friends. Although a lot of people awaited for this day, do they know where it originated from?
Valentine’s Day originated from an event that occurred in third century of Rome. At the time, Rome was caught in a war with neighboring countries. In order to ensure the soldier’s best quality action, Emperor Claudius II, who believed marriage weakened the soldiers, banned marriage between two young lovers. This was a shock to all the citizens. Seeing this, Bishop Saint Valentine, in sympathy towards the citizens, secretly wed two young lovers in holy matrimonies. It was not long until the Emperor discovered this and imprisoned Saint Valentine. While waiting for his execution, Valentine cured one of the soldier’s blind daughter’s eye with his holy powers. Soon after, the Emperor decided to let Valentine live if he were to agree with the ban of marriage. He disagreed and was sentenced to death. Right before his execution, Valentine asked the previous soldier to allow him to write a letter to his lover. At the end of the letter he wrote the phrase, “From your Valentine.”
It is said that Valentine was executed on the 14th of February and that’s where Valentine’s Day originated. While it seems rather ironic that such a lovely anniversary came from such an unfortunate event it is also disheartening that people have fun without knowing anything about this. Before we enjoy our delicious sweet chocolates, why don’t we think about the bittersweet ending of Bishop Saint Valentine first?

Worst Date Prospects We Love to Hate (Suzie Park)
Henry VIII (Historical Figure, reigned 1509 – 1547)
Now here’s the king of bad relationships. He might seem mighty attractive with the amount of wealth and kingdom he owns, but don’t be easily deceived. His health problems are endless; he has a fifty four inch waistline and he suffers from frequent migraines along with insomnia. He is also quite the ladies’ man (despite his obviously repellent physical qualities) even though he isn’t very good at treating them well. He divorced his first wife when she couldn’t produce a male heir. He got tired of his second wife and beheaded her. After that he had three more wives: they went in the order of death, divorce, and execution. His last wife was the only one to have survived thanks to his untimely death (Thank Heavens, think of the massacre). Unless you would want to mark history as Henry’s seventh beheaded or divorced wife, it would be best to leave him out of your dating prospects. |
Cleopatra VII (Historical figure, 69 BC – 30 BC)
To start off, when you date Cleopatra, you’d be doing her a big favor since she’s married to her twelve year old brother. Actually, to tell you the truth, she married both her brothers after her first husband/brother drowned in the Nile River. So I think she would be glad to start a romantic relationship with someone outside of her own family line. Nonetheless, you better be careful not to fall too head over heels for her. Always make sure your attraction towards her isn’t just at the surface. She’s known for her dangerously seductive sex appeal. She mostly uses it to attract older men who are at least twice her age, but’s it’s good to be on the safe side. But even so, Cleo’s pretty fickle too; she’ll eventually leave you to have another affair with another man anyway. |
Edward Cullen (Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer)
There are so many reasons why you shouldn’t date this creature that other girls pine and romanticize. First of all, he’s a vampire, which means he lusts after your blood. Enough with the unrealistic idea of falling in love with fantasy monsters who presumably have human hearts – get real –he’s attracted to your blood. Secondly, he’s a hundred year old vampire who lusts after teenage girls. His strongest attribute is his stalking ability – yes, he can and he will watch you in your sleep. (How romantic!) Thirdly, he throws the entire belief system of the supernatural community out of whack! What happened to good old fashioned coffins and death when exposed to sunlight? When Edward Cullen takes a step into daylight, he starts sparkling like a deformed unicorn! How macho of him. Who wouldn’t want to date this vampire? |
Daisy Buchanan (The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald)
Hands down, the most insufferable date any man would ever face in his life time. Of course, she may be a precious little girl from a rich family with mounds of filthy gold but if you’re expecting to get a penny out of the date – you’d be wrong. Don’t get your hopes up; she won’t go for the check. She won’t ever give you a glance unless every inch of you is practically screaming, “I’m wealthy and I own expensive shirts!” But even if you are able to grab a hold of her shallow attention span, she’ll spend the rest of the date: flirting with her cousin, running over middle aged women with your car, and eventually running back to her racist and abusive husband. She’ll break your heart, but if you were foolish enough to fall in love with her in the first place, you probably had it coming. |
Socrates (Historical Figure, 470 BC – 399 BC)
Your first date with Socrates may start on the upper side. Socrates initially made his living as a master stone cutter but it turns out he’s a genius at philosophical discussion. He’s a great teacher too; he’s got a crowd of followers and students. Nevertheless, he’ll probably start to bother you after the third or fourth date. You’d learn from experience not to question anything. When faced with a problem Socrates will easily give you a migraine. He’d take your inquiry, break it down into a series of other questions, and pester you for hours with questions you don’t have answers to. Socrates: So you think this means this. But this means this, right? So that would mean that this is this and this is that, so ultimately this is that, right? (Yes, Socrates, that’s right. Now let’s break up.) -02/14/2014 (Volume III Issue III) |
Movie Review: Thor 2 (Risoo Kim)
For Term 2, I recommend the movie Thor: The Dark World (2013), which is also known as Thor 2. It is directed by Alan Taylor and produced by Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Cinematic Universe is the company that produced a lot of hero movies such as Captain America, The Amazing Spider Man, X-Men, Hulk, and Iron Man. As Thor 2 is the sequel to Thor: God of Thunder (2011) and also connected to the film Avengers (2012), the storylines are all relative to one another.
Thor: The Dark World has a star-studded cast. Chris Hemsworth, who was also in Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), Natalie Portman, who is also known for the movie, Star Wars, and Tom Hiddleston are the main actors and actresses in the movie. Not only did the main actors and actresses give an outstanding work, but the supporting actors such as Anthony Hopkins and Christopher Eccliston also provided a great performance.
The most notable points that should be complimented are the computer graphics skills and scenes with humor. The scale of the scenes is tremendously huge and makes the viewers in the theatre concentrate the whole time. However, the scenes with laughter and humor helped the audience to relax a bit through its eye popping graphics and serious plotlines. To enjoy all the scenes with humor, viewers should watch Thor: God of Thunder and Avengers beforehand since there are some humors that can only be understood if you are familiar with the storyline of these two movies.
However, for some of you who are not interested in superhero movies and perceive them to have over redundant plotlines, then I recommend you spend your time watching a different movie as you may find the plot of this action-packed movie to be quite predictable and overrated. Nonetheless, if you enjoyed most of the hero movies produced by Marvel Cinematic Universe and crave for more heart pounding action, you will definitely fall in love with this movie.

Quiz: Why am I still Single? (Jenna Choi)
If you were standing on a garden in the future, what would the garden look like?
1. Garden with thick trees that doesn’t allow any sunlight
2. Garden with trees and sunlight
3. Garden with one big tree
4. Garden that does not have any trees
Answers and their Meanings
1. Garden with thick trees that doesn’t allow any sunlight
You are waiting for a person that will captivate you at first glance. You are hopelessly waiting for someone who will give you the giddy feeing of love as if that person is “the one” for you, designated by fate and destiny. Yet, because of your unrealistic ideals, you overlook any prospects near you, although there are so many possibilities. You also do not consider meeting with someone who has just a single quality that you dislike. You are very picky about the most minor things, which is the reason why you are still single.
2. Garden with trees and sunlight
You have a lot of people around you, but you treat them only as friends. You may be acting too friendly and casual around your peers, so the opposite gender feels that it is very difficult to see you as any more than a close friend. However, if you begin to change your overly comfortable attitude, then you have the highest chance of attracting somebody’s attention.
3. Garden with one big tree
You do not express your feelings towards others to the extent where others begin to misunderstand how you feel. They may interpret your mysterious and nonchalant attitude as a sign of great dislike towards them rather a feeling of appeal or attraction. You should be brave enough to express your true feelings towards that person so that he/ she can approach you more easily.
4. Garden that does not have any trees
You are so dense about the field of relationships to the point where you have absolutely no clue on how to behave in front of the person you like. This is most likely the case for those who have never been in a relationship before. But your lack of experience shouldn’t be too much of an obstacle; have some more confidence!

Food Review: ASHLEY American Grill & Salad (Brian Kim)
Ashley, a delicious American style buffet restaurant, has now become my favorite restaurant in Cheongna. Located on the second floor in the recently opened Homeplus, it can be easily bypassed because of the popularity and diversity of the food court right next to it. However, once you find Ashley right behind the food court, you’ll find yourself going there over and over again like I did.
As someone who lived in the United States for more than nine years, I found myself craving American food so much, but I couldn’t find any affordable American restaurants where I could eat my heart out. But thankfully, I found about Ashley through an invitation from a friend and have eaten there again ever since.
Ashley offers two meal options, the salad bar and the steak main course meal. However, saying that the “salad bar” is only a salad bar is an understatement; the salad bar offers so much more: from pasta and pizza to scrumptious desserts. Unless you have an intense craving of steak and you don’t want to spend too much money, don’t ignore the salad bar or else you will be missing out on eating the variety of American foods.
When I dashed toward the salad bar at first to pick up my plate, I couldn’t help but to ignore the plain looking salad in front of me. There were so many appetizing foods to choose from, including burgers, four different kinds of pasta, three different kinds of pizza, pork belly, ribs, wings, frittata, mac and cheese, soup, and more. Of course, for those who prefer an Asian cuisine, the salad bar also allows you to make your own bibimbap and udon.
After I got through a couple of helpings, I decided to try out the desserts, which were definitely the best part of the whole experience. When I got to the desserts that were named “Crème Duflee” and “Panna Cotta,” I wasn’t sure what to expect. But after finding out that these were gourmet desserts, I realized I had the privilege of trying them both for the first time. The restaurant also offered a brownie cake and cheesecake, which was fantastic, along with an equally delicious vanilla and strawberry sorbet ice cream.
Taking a step back to reflect on the restaurant as a whole, I thought the seating arrangements were nicely organized and the service was excellent as well. The waiters quickly took care of our used plates. However, I wished that the cooks would refill the food trays at the bar quickly because I found myself not being able to eat some of the food that I wanted right away – but this was partly due to the enormous popularity of the restaurant.
As for the prices, the salad bar for lunch costs 12,900 won, and the salad bar for dinner, weekends, and on holidays cost 19,900 won. The main menu steaks cost upwards of 7,900 won. Even though the price might be slightly higher than what you would like, it is well worth it since the buffet is ironically highly superior to any of the buffets I visited during my stay in America.

Halloween Special: Spooky Short Story (Suzie Park)
I was lying in the school nursery bed, quite alone.
The nurse must have gone for a quick errand of some sort. I snuggled against the pillow as I felt the soft texture of it caress my left cheek. I had just woken up from a dreamless sleep but my mind was still drowsy, suffering from the head cold I had contracted earlier in the day. I tried to soothe myself back into sleep, but that was when I heard a small sound echoing from the windowsill.
Tap, Tap, Tap…
I thought to ignore it at first, blaming the sound on a passing bird.
Tap, Tap, Tap… Tap, Tap, Tap…
The sound was growing more urgent and harsh. Groaning irritably, I twisted and turned, rolling my body around to face the source of the sound.
I found a familiar yet foreign face. I recognized him to be one of the students in our grade whom I had never spoken to before. He was a frail boy, too scrawny and little for his age. He was the one kid who nobody talked to, the one kid that no one ate lunch with, the one kid who was always left out in gym class: our school’s very own Boo Radley.
His face was alarmingly pale. His chalk white skin was even more accentuated by the boney features of his gaunt face. His mouth was just a thin line; lips so pale that they were barely recognizable on his pasty skin. I vaguely remember thinking to myself in the past that he must have some sort of physical illness for he simply did not fit in with the others. He was different.
His right index finger continued to tap against the window.
Tap, Tap, Tap...
He seemed to want my undivided attention. I blinked my eyes slowly and waved at him, acknowledging to him that I had seen him.
His finger paused immediately. Now he was just staring at me. The edge of his mouth twitched, curling slightly into an unmistakable grin. But it looked odd; it added a more horrible, ghoulish look to his exterior. The eyes – the most unusual part of his face – were black as coal. They were empty, void, which added a quite deadened look to his face. The warmth had gone from the room now. The boy had a definite eerie atmosphere to him that I could not understand for sure.
Then in a second, the boy had vanished.
I blinked for a few seconds, processing the boy’s image in my head. His last expression seemed to have been a bit of satisfaction, as if he was happy that someone had finally noticed him. I rolled over onto my back and continued to contemplate whilst staring up at the blank ceiling. Then I froze, rigid in my bed, as I had a shocking revelation. My body remained motionless as my mind finally comprehended – the school nursery was on the third floor.
A finger, ever so lightly, tapped me on the shoulder; a cold breath tickling the lower right part of my neck.
Tap, Tap, Tap…

Movie Review - Guan Sang/Face Reader (Risoo Kim)
The movie up for recommendation this term is the Korean historical film named Guan-Sang. A movie that premiered in September 11th 2013 has already brought in four million viewers within nine days of its opening date. The director of this movie is Jae-rim Han, who has put together a variety of movies with different genres such as: mellow, romance, science fiction, crime, and comedy. The ones brewing even more heated attention are however, the actors. The lead actors and actresses are Gang-ho Song, Jung-jae Lee, Hyae-soo Kim and Jong-seok Lee. Each of these celebrities has been acclaimed in Korea for their high quality acting skills, hence creating a large level of expectation by the viewers for this movie. Yet, are the high prospects for this movie completely fulfilled by all viewers? To learn more let’s drive into more depth about the movie – with no spoils of course.
For one thing, to enjoy this movie, one must first understand the basis of the story. The movie takes place in the Joseon period of Korean history. Since the movie’s setting is in a time period that is not as familiar, one might find some aspects of the movie difficult to understand. Due to the movie having a historical timeline, it has yielded both positive and negative reviews, depending on individual’s interest in Korea’s past events. Nevertheless, to those who have some appeal and basic knowledge of Korean history, this movie would be worth watching.
The title of this movie Guan-sang translates as physiognomy in English. This term, though it may seem foreign to most at first, has a relatively easy meaning. To put it simply, the title refers to the outward appearance of anything that provides insight to the depth of a character. The general story follows the male lead, Nae-gyung who is able to predict the fate of a person through the arts of physiognomy. Despite some of the negative critiques this movie has been gaining, I would like to give this movie with a high rating for its stunningly suspenseful turn of events and its fantastic collaboration of high quality cast members.

Dine at Lunarich! (Risoo Kim and Jenna Choi)
The restaurant in Cheongna that we would like to recommend in Term 1 is Lunarich.
As ‘luna’ means moon and ‘rich’ means abundance, the restaurant was named this way to show that it is going to try to offer many different dishes to help people taste high quality food; as Lunarich franchises in about 30 different areas in Korea, the taste and quality of the food is guaranteed. Moreover, it serves pizza, pasta, risotto, salad, and steak as an Italian restaurant. The restaurant is also designed in a lyrical mood with Italian style. The chefs and waiters are formally dressed, wearing suits and hats for sanitation. You may enjoy the restaurant’s placid, mild atmosphere as you have a meal. Personally, we especially recommend steak pizza and squid ink pasta. They are both very unique and delicious.
