The Soccer Season at CDS (Jiwon Kang)
The tryouts for the varsity soccer team took place in preparation for the upcoming soccer season. Mr. Musselman, our brilliant psychology teacher, has taken the position of head coach of the boy’s team with Mr. Talbot as his assistant coach. Coach Laders will be leading the girl’s team. During a meeting before the tryouts, Mr. Musselman stated that he views hard work and commitment as the most important qualities he wants his players to have. It is important that our players are motivated to work hard for not only the soccer team but academics as well.
About 30 students showed up to the boys tryouts. Many familiar faces were there from last year’s team but the new talents trying for the team this year could not be ignored. On the first day of the tryouts, the students ran the beep test and tested their fitness with pushups and sit-ups. Those who made the first round of cuts showed up for the second day of tryouts which consisted of passing, shooting, possession, and small 5 aside games.
After the second round of cuts, the guys who had made it this far had their stamina tested with a 5k run followed by a full 11 versus 11 game. Those who made the final cut could now call themselves proud members of the CDS soccer team. But there is not one moment where the players can be relaxed – they are expected to follow a strict set of rules. If any student shows poor attitude to coaches or officials, they receive a minimum 1 game suspension.
The boy’s team practices on Mondays and Wednesdays after school while the girl’s practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Although this isn’t the ideal time to be running outside because of yellow dust, the passion of our players is more than enough to overcome this problem. There have even been practices in the rain. It is important that the team has togetherness and the players motivate each other.
The boys soccer team has since then had two matches. In their second match of the season against BISC, and won with a domineering score of 8:1 led by the team captain James Park (12).
Please give your support to your CDS soccer team who are practicing hard to get a good result. Who knows, the CDS soccer team could go unbeaten. for the season.

"Puppy Dog Eyes" (Julie An)
“Puppy dog eyes,” according to Urban Dictionary, is defined as “enlarging your eyes over dramatically with a sad face to get whatever you desire.” Puppy eyes definitely are irresistible. They prevent you from denying anything they seem to ask from you. But why?
Japanese researchers at Azabu University found that when owners look at their puppies in their eyes, they experience elevated levels of oxytocin, a hormone that ignites feelings of love. - the same hormone that is secreted when a mother breastfeeds or looks at her baby. Experts think that this bond between a dog and its owner developed after dogs started to become domesticated.
<Experiment One>
Researchers collected urine from a group of dogs and their owners before and after a 30-minute interaction. The result was that the pair of dog and owner that had gazed at each other the most experienced the biggest surge of oxytocin in their urine.
<Experiment Two>
When researchers gave dogs extra oxytocin through a nasal spray, the female dogs gazed at their owners for a longer period of time, which thus boosted the owners’ oxytocin levels.
What is amazing about these two experiments is that the studies discovered that oxytocin can boost gaze interactions between two completely different species.
The researches repeated their experiments with wolves: to see if a wolf-to-owner gaze would raise oxytocin levels as well. However, the wolves barely gazed at their owners, and the owners experienced no significant difference in oxytocin level.
Dogs have been long called “men’s best friend” – now we know why: it’s all due to their puppy dog eyes!

Losing Your Hair Recently? (Eunice Mun)
As the senior students, in AP Literature and Composition and English honors class may know from reading the book, American Pastoral, prostate cancer was the cause of the protagonist Swede Levov’s death. The Swede’s hair had been thinning, and if he had known this fact earlier on, he might have gone under prostate cancer screening earlier. Unfortunately, he had not known and the character passed away.
As both females and males would agree, hair is an indispensable part of one’s appearance. As a result, baldness is one of the most terrifying phenomenons.
In recent studies at the American Association for Cancer, scientists suggest that risk of prostate cancer correlates with baldness.
The cause of this might have something to do with the high level of male hormones such as testosterone. As a result, baldness is more prone to occur towards men than women. Therefore, males who are bald have higher levels of hormones, which also increase the growth of prostate cancer cells.
These findings can help in males checking their health when they start getting bald. Another study has found that men who are bald in the twenties have a higher risk of getting prostate cancer than those who start losing hair later.
Overall, men with any kind of balding, whether it is hair loss in the front hairline or the top of the back of the head, were 56 percent more inclined to having prostate cancer over men in their 20s who were not losing hair at all. This research is still undergoing to find more evidence to prove that this correlation does in fact exists.

The Stress of Student Loans (Eunice Mun)
Getting ready for college is already a burden to students, caused by studying for exams and the tension of graduating on time. However, there is even more stress that is added to the damage on student’s mental health: the debt from student loans.
A recent study by Katrina Walsemann who is the current professor in University of South Carolina, and her colleagues found the associations between student loans and mental health in young adults. They studied responses of 4,643 Americans born in the range of 1980 and 1984. As expected, there was a positive correlation: the higher the student’s loans, the poorer his or her mental health is. The researchers also analyzed other factors that might contribute to young adult’s mental health such as respondent’s current occupation and highest level of education completed. The result is that the only distinguishing element was the amount of loans in the student’s name.
However, there was one aspect that was surprising for the researchers. If a student was from a low-income family, as a matter of fact, their mental health improved with higher student loans. It is possible that the loans assisted the student receive a higher social status and therefore increased the person’s overall happiness.
In contempt of all this, it is considered that higher education is still a useful investment. Studies show that it has long run benefits on income, job security, and employment.

Memory By Blood (Suzie Park)
Memory is a large part of our identity. Without memory, we wouldn't be able to recall who we are, what we've done, or where to go.
With memory being so important, many researchers have tried to expand the memory of individuals. However, a new study published by the National Institutes of Health and the US Department of Health and Human Services stated that there may be a part of our memory that we cannot control, our blood type.
There are four different kinds of major blood type: A, B, AB, and O. The type of our blood depends on the protein formula (antigens) in our red blood cells, which are passed down from our parents. If a substance called the Rh factor is also present then the blood type is categorized as positive.
Now, according to the research done by Dr. Mary Cushman at University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, people with blood type AB (the rarest kind) are more likely to develop cognitive and memory problems that could possibly lead to dementia. Dementia is a type of brain disease where the patient’s ability to think and remember is slowly diminished.
Dr. Cushman explained her theory that for people with blood type AB, they are at a higher risk of cognitive impairment due to their genes making them more prone to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.
Therefore, the study states that people with higher levels of this protein makes the people 24% more likely to develop thinking and memory problems. More experiments are being held to further test the accuracy of this theory.

The Role of Physical Education at CDS (Julie An)
The seniors in Cheongna Dalton School do not have Physical Education as one of their mandatory courses. What are the pros and cons of not having Physical Education as part of the regular school schedule? Did seniors actually want this? What about the soon-to-be seniors? Do they prefer this schedule? We asked a few of the seniors’ and non-seniors’ for their honest opinions on the matter.
What do you think are the pros and cons of not having PE classes? Do you prefer having PE classes?
Mary Jane Chang (12): I think the benefit of not having PE as one of my classes is that I don't have to go to the next class all sweaty and exhausted. The con is that now that I don't exercise regularly, I have gained a lot of weight and have become really lazy. Yet I prefer not having Physical Education classes – I really don’t like sports.
Kate Yoo (12): In this school, yeah, I prefer not having PE classes. I used to like PE, but here in CDS I don’t feel like we do anything. In my own school I didn’t have to do it with so many girls… In here, the classes are divided between boys and girls, and that’s sexist. It’s not as fun.
Ra Won Park (12): I think the benefit is that not having PE classes allows me to spend that extra time on things I really need to work on – the college apps, for example. I have a lot of things to do as a senior, and I actually get to spend my time on doing them. You also don’t feel as tired and exhausted. The con is that your stamina dies out... really badly. I run a few seconds, and my heart bursts.
Soohee Kim (12): The con is, I feel fat. I feel like I’m getting thicker and thicker. So I prefer having Physical Education as one of my classes. The pros are that you don’t have to smell sweaty in the middle of the school day and that you do not have to get points deducted for not bringing your PE uniform to school.
Jeff Choi (12): I do want to participate, but I don’t want to be forced. The school should make PE classes an optional course, so that people who want to take PE classes can take it and people who do not prefer do not have to. This is usually the case in other schools. Eleventh and twelfth graders who want to major in sports can choose to take PE classes.
Kathy Lew (12): On one side, I like how I feel less exhausted and I have more free time. On the other side, I can feel my stamina die out. I still prefer not having PE classes.
Do you prefer having PE classes or not having PE classes?
Enya Song (11): I prefer not having PE classes. In PE classes you get forced to do certain sports at a certain time. I prefer doing sports with my own free will in my own free time.
Joshua Kim (11) : Of course you need PE. Sports is important, man. You can’t study if you aren’t healthy. Trust me.

First Game of the Basketball Season (Jinnie Yoo)
After a few weeks of practice, the basketball players had their first match against Global Vision Christian School (GVCS) on Tuesday, November 18th.
The girls finished the match with a leading score of (30-4) while the boys finished it with a close play (35-48). As the number of free throws grew in the boys and girls games, the coaches of GVCS’s groans grew louder. Kate Yoo, a center forward playing for the Girls’ team who scored nearly half of the points, stated how the ball movement played a key role in the victory of the match: “By moving the ball, CDS got more open looks and were able to knock them down.”
The two coaches of the Girls’ team Ms. Bishop and Ms. Aylward, constantly complimented the girls defense and how it helped with the offensive outbreak. Jason Lee, the power forward for the Boys’ team states how the boys were not able to play to their fullest: “It was the first game of the season and there were some new members in our team so we were really nervous going into the game.” Strategically speaking, “In offense, we need to swing the ball when the opponent is using zone defense, but most importantly we need to not forget about our plays.” In addition, when asked about the improvements the Boys’ team could work on for the upcoming matches, he mentioned, “Firstly, we need more practice. We got into the game with only one play prepared. Secondly, we need to communicate more.” The next match for the two teams will be an away game on November 28th against KKFS. All those who wish to cheer for the teams will have a chance at the home game on December 6th at 9:30am against ICSU.

Basketball Season Tryouts (Jiwon Kang)
The basketball season has started this winter and the tryouts for the team took place to select those who would represent CDS on the court.
The girl’s tryouts happened before the boy’s tryouts in the gym. There were new coaches for the basketball season: Mr. Clem looked over the boys’ basketball team while Miss Aylward led the girls.
There were many exciting prospects in the boy’s tryouts. New faces such as David Lee (10), Benjamin Choi (10), and Jayden Kim (10) impressed others at the boy’s tryouts. There were also lots of returning star players like John Lee (12), Caleb Lee (10), Dominic Yoon (11), Nick Choi (11), and Billy Jeon (12). In the girl’s team, the sister duo of Kate Yoo (12) and Jinnie Yoo (10) did well.
The tryouts were conducted like a typical high school basketball tryout, starting off with some basic drills such as right and left handed layup lines. It then moved on to more technical demonstrations such as jump shooting off dribbles and passes, dribbling, free-throw shooting, and different kinds of passes. The players were also assessed on rebounding abilities, jumping techniques, defensive movements and other crucial skills. The coaches then divided the players into teams for a scrimmage, in order to evaluate how everybody performed in real game situations. It seemed like all the CDS players were eager to participate and become better.
It was good to see new students doing so well alongside more experienced members returning from last year’s team. The pile of new talent only adds to the team’s strength and makes this year’s basketball season more exciting. We have an upcoming game at home against CCS after Winter Break. With the way that the play-ers performed at the tryouts, it’s hard to see the CDS students not winning any of the future games.

The Volleyball Season Recap (Soo Jin Lee)
Both CDS Boys’ and Girls’ volleyball team have led another successful season this year despite their rough start. The students had to participate in three tryouts due to many eager competitors. But who would have thought the three tryouts actually helped the coaches to choose future 25 KISAC winners?
Although the players had basic skills and showed specialized skills in different areas, there were plenty of opportunities for them to improve. Throughout the season, Boys’ and Girls’ volleyball teams strengthened their skills through weekly practices, a tournament, and four games to give a hundred percent in the championship.
The season did not end easily for the team as much as its rough beginning. On October 18th, the day of KISAC Tournament, the coaches and boys and girls were waiting for a ride to their destination. How-ever, the bus was nowhere to be seen for 20 minutes from the time the team was supposed to leave. There had been a miscommunication and the school was not able to provide any transportation. The only way to get to the tournament was to ride subway.
Although the Girls' volleyball team played immediately against Chadwick after they arrived, they were unstoppable. However, exhaustion came over them at the final. The opponent was BIFS (Busan International Foreign School), who had already lost to CDS. But the two rivals met again to compete for the first place. Unfortunately for CDS, the first round did not go well. It was hard for them to play after all the intense matches from before.
After the first round, Ms. Sokoli said, “I don’t care about us winning but give your 100% in the game” and encouraged the girls. She added, “They are playing safe now because we beat them before. Use that and be aggressive.” On the next two rounds, the girls spiked the ball hard and led the team to first place in KISAC. It was the best moment for the girls and Ms. Sokoli.
The Boy’s Volleyball team also ended their season with a satisfying result. Their tournament was held in Dulwich, Banpo, and they faced BIFS, CMIS, and BISC. The boys were victorious in every game except the one against BISF. The two teams met again to compete for the KISAC first place. Although the boys tried their best, they lost to BISF again in the final, but still won second place. This year was the best year for the CDS Boys’ volleyball team. During the season, the boys lost more than they won in the games. However, they were not discouraged and worked hard on improving their skills under Mr. Tronsgard’s coaching. They improved day by day and finally showed off their true skills in the end.
CDS is very proud of both Boys’ and Girls’ volleyball teams for their passion and their achieve-ments. Also, the seniors are looking forward to the next new generation of CDS volleyball team. So any-one who is interested in volleyball and continuing on the winning streak is welcome to join the team.

CDS vs. GVCS (Edward James Suh)
On September 29, Dalton faced GVCS as their second game opponent.
The girls’ game started at 16:30. The girls, led by Coach Ana Sokoli, kicked off their start with the Kwon and Yoo sisters, Soo Jin Lee, and Jenna Choi. The CDS student body had high expectations for the girls’ volleyball team since last year. However, GVCS girls pressed forward, which shook the Dalton girls for a moment. Yet, with powerful spikes and teamwork, the girls regained their ground, and won the first set 25 to 20. Although it was a close game, the team never faltered. GVCS girls’ volleyball team lost their spirit after their first shocking loss, allowing the Dalton girls to win the next two sets: 25 to 10 and 25 to 11. The girls won the game 3 to 0, proving why the Dalton girls’ volleyball team is “undefeated.”
Pumped from the girls’ game, the boys’ game soon began. The boys, led by Coach Craig Tronsgard, sent John Lee, Dominic Yoon, Jinoo Im, Caleb Kim, Nick Choi, and Yoon Jang on the first line. The boys lost their balance due to miscommunication, giving away several points, losing the first set 15 to 25. The boys, after their loss, regained their strength and hit GVCS boys with all they’ve got: powerful spikes, diving, setting, and blocking. However, the Dalton boys were outmatched, accepting yet another defeat on their next two sets: 18 to 25 and 22 to 25.

First Game of the Volleyball Season (Kathy Lew)
As the volleyball season of the year started, the teams had their first tournament on Saturday, September 20th. They played against different teams from CI and BISC. The tournament officially started 8:20 in the morning and ended around 2:50 in the afternoon.
The tournament for the boys started at 10:40. They went against the boys of BISC, losing the first set with a score of 25 to 15. As the second set started, the boys were able to pick up their pace and showed better action throughout the set even though they still lost by three points.
Their second game with CI Varsity started right away. The boys lost again, with their first set’s score being 25 to 13, and the second set was 25 to 17.
The last game for the boys started at 1:55 after they took a rest for an hour. Their last game was against CI Junior Varsity. Although they lost their first set by 12 to 25, the boys got back on their feet and won the second set 29 to 27. Because both teams won one set each, they played a set to 15 points. The CDS boys won the last game 15 to 13.
The girls were once again undefeatable, following their winning streak last year, and won all three matches against the other schools. Their first match started at 10:40 as well. During their match against CI Junior Varsity, the girls lost the first set 25 to 12. Quickly recovering from their loss, the girls did not quit and won other two sets 14 to 25 and 8 to 15.
Keeping up their pace, they won their first set against BISC 25 to 9. They lost their second half but managed to win the last set 15 to 7. Their last game was with CI Varsity; the girls won both sets 12 to 25 and 23 to 25.
Whether we won or not, this was only the first game of the year. So let’s make sure that our school spirit doesn’t die out and continue to cheer on the CDS volleyball teams throughout the entire season!

The New Coaches (Jinnie Yoo)
Ms. Ana Sokoli, the new CDS girls’ volleyball coach this year, has been at this school for over a year. She began her volleyball career at the age of 13 in Italy. Then, she continued to play throughout high school until she tore a ligament (ACL) in university. After recovering from her injury, she continued to play occasionally. Ms. Sokoli revealed how she decided to coach the team because she is extremely passionate about volleyball and because she wanted to transmit that passion to the players. She also added how she loved to see people improve on their skills.
Ms. Sokoli’s ideal player would be someone who has the perfect attitude, listens to the coach and tries to play as a team player. An outstanding player will apply what he/she learns into practice and then fight to improve constantly. She wishes to see the players gain confidence not just in volleyball, but also in their daily lives. Her final remarks were, “I want to extend volleyball season and see girls play in other types of tournaments, so that’s what I’m aiming for and that’s what I’m pushing for.” Mr. Tronsgard, the new boys’ volleyball coach, has been a CDS faculty member for over nine months and currently teaches Grade 3 in the First Program. During his interview, he recalled how he’s been playing volleyball ever since high school as well. He then played volleyball for five more years during his university years then also coached for several years after. This is his ninth year coaching volleyball. Mr. Tronsgard mentioned his enthusiasm and passion for volleyball by stating how he loves to stay connected to the sport, whether its coaching, refereeing, or watching. As for Mr. Tronsgard, he expects to see a willingness to learn, listen, and play with a positive attitude from the players. Additionally, he stated that he would much rather have a player who is willing to improve than one who is already good, but not willing to take any further steps. When asked if there were any wise words he wished to tell his players, he answered, “Keep working hard, work throughout the year, not just during the volleyball season. I hope that players will grow a passion for volleyball.” -09/26/2014 |
Volleyball Season: The Three Tryouts (Soo Jin Lee)
On September 2nd, over twenty enthusiastic boys and girls gathered in the gym for the 2014-15 volleyball tryouts. Last year’s successful volleyball season caused an increase in number of enthusiastic players. Most of the original members from last year’s team joined again and showed off their talents while new students uncovered their own hidden skills.
This year, instead of having one coach, the teams now have two: Mr. Tronsgard and Ms. Sokoli. According to Ms. Sokoli, the reason for having two coaches this year is that everyone is at different level and the coaches want to improve their skills and work as a team. On the first day of tryouts, the students were tested for their passing, setting, and spiking skills, and physical fitness. The tryout lasted for an hour, but that was not enough time to decide the official members among forty students. The 2nd tryout was held on Friday, September 2. Most of the girls showed up but most of the boys who lived in the dormitory were absent.
For the boys, another tryout was expected, but to the girls, the news of a third tryout was rather shocking. But Ms. Sokoli explained that she wanted to give the two members who couldn’t make it last time another chance. In their last tryout, the students played the hardest. The results were then posted the next day during lunch.
Compared to last year, the team is relatively small. The CDS volleyball teams are already scheduled to play in various tournaments in the near future. Although they do not have enough time to practice, everyone is determined to give it their one hundred percent in the games.

Away Game CDS vs. Chadwick (Suzie Park)
Yesterday the CDS soccer teams each had an away game at Chadwick school. The boys’ soccer team tried their best but lost by the score of 0:2. Their captain Andy An (11) stated that the main reason for their loss was most likely due to the accumulation of stress and the lack of sleep left over from the final exam period since the game literally took place as soon as the last exam ended.
For the CDS girls’ soccer team tied 1:1. The girls’ match was full of unexpected turns. The only goal that the team conceded was actually performed by one of the CDS team members. It was meant to be a pass to the captain/goal keeper Sanhae Kim (11), but it ended up in the net as an unfortunate own goal. Jinnie Yoo (9) had earlier scored to put the girls in the lead.
Overall though the matches were quite clean. The CDS teams’ worries of possible gamesmanship by the Chadwick teams, based on their previous encounters, fortunately did not come true as the atmosphere of fair play and sportsmanship remained throughout the game.

Away Game CDS vs. CCS (Soo Jin Lee)
1:0 – That was the score of the CDS Girls Soccer Team’s away game against CCS. The game began as soon as the girls arrived at the field. The match was supposed to begin exactly at four but unfortunately the CDS team's arrival onto the field was delayed. Thus, the CDS team had to play in a very disadvantageous situation since they had to start the match without being able to warm up. However, the players still managed to bring out their skills and talents to achieve their third victory of the season. In this match, Michelle Park (11) was the MVP who scored the only goal.
Next week on Wednesday April 30th there will be another match, this time for both the CDS boys and girls teams. They are scheduled to play against Chadwick at home. In their previous match with Chadwick, CDS was unfairly treated due to several dishonest actions made by their opponents. They are hoping to win the next match fair and square.

CDS vs. ICSU Home Match (Suzie Park)
The second home game played by the CDS girls and boys soccer teams was against ICSU. The games turned in favor of our school teams on the field yesterday. The players showed great effort and coordination during their matches, leading to victories for both CDS teams. The girls won by the score of 2:1 and the boys won by the score of 3:0.
Now onto the details of the matches. Overall they were very friendly. The captains for these afternoon matches were: Sanhae Kim (11) for the girls soccer team and Andy An (11) for the boys soccer team. Everyone worked extremely hard during the match; the highlights of the games were performed by several players that deserve recognition. Both goals were scored by Jinnie Yoo (9) for the girls team, as the goalkeeper, Sanhae Kim, successfully blocked shots from being further made by the opposing team, which could have tied the score. As for the boys team, the goalscorers were Billy Jeon (11), James Park (11), and Jay Seok (11) in that order, while the goalkeeper, Jason Lee (11), achieved a shutout. Overall it was a team effort. In the end, Woman and Man of the Matches, respectively, were Jinnie Yoo and Billy Jeon. Yet, everyone deserves as much kudos for playing wonderfully.
We hope that the CDS soccer teams continue to gain victories in their future matches.

The Boys Soccer Season (Dae Jung Kim)
At last, after waiting for six whole months, the soccer season has finally arrived after being delayed by the volleyball and basketball team for almost half a year. Now that a new season has come to shine, new hopes are high for the team as its members try hard to bring forth some outstanding results in the upcoming matches.
On the fateful day of the tryouts, many anxious students took their position in line as each of them sought to prove their skills in order to be selected for the school’s team. The judge of this tryout was Mr. Harrison, the high-school director. After each students putted in their best efforts as an attempt to play for the team, the applicants awaited for the ultimate pronouncement. In a week’s time, the team members were selected and their first match against Chadwick was scheduled. When the day of the game came and our players filed out onto the field, they were locked in a tight struggle with the opposing team. Although CDS fought hard, the team lost by 3:1. “There were several reasons why we lost to the opposite team,” said Andy An, last year’s captain of the soccer team, “First of all, several members of the team were absent while we were preparing for the upcoming match, some of these members being Jason, James, etc. Then there was the lack of practice, so the players weren’t able to have good coordination with one another. I think if I were to choose the main thing that the team lacked, it would be practice.” Although our team has lost to Chadwick, this outcome should not bring our hopes down. There is always room for improvement, to develop what we originally had. With this prospect, let us not be discouraged for future competitions against other teams. |

One Honest Goal is worth more than Three Corrupt Goals (Soo Jin Lee)
This season is another meaningful time for CDS. A new sports team has been assembled. Many passionate boys and girls volunteered to tryout and are now proud representatives of CDS’s first soccer team. Despite many inexperienced members, the Girls’ Soccer Team is pushing their limits to improve their skills under Mr. Harrison’s coaching.
On March 15th, CDS had their first match against Chadwick. As the teams entered the field, there was high tension present in the air. The only thing that was on their minds was the determination to defeat the opponent. In the beginning, the goddess of luck seemed to be on CDS’s side. Sanhae Kim (11) scored a goal within just three minutes in the beginning of the game. “When I scored, I was relieved. Our team lacked practice but we scored the first goal. It was the power of teamwork that helped me. Jinnie Yoo (9) passed the ball to Soohee [Kim] (11) and Soohee [Kim] passed it to me.” However, Chadwick proved that they weren’t an easy opponent. At the end, although CDS tried its best, Chadwick won the match by 3:1.
After the match, the players were found letting out frustrated sighs. “They cheated. Chadwick cheated,” explained Sanhae Kim. According to the story, CDS athletes had played in an unjust environment. Chadwick benefited from an unpenalized handball. Chadwick’s dirty plays did not stop there. When the goalkeeper has the ball, no player is allowed to touch it; when Nara Lee (10), the CDS goalkeeper, had the ball in her hand, one of the Chadwick players kicked it and scored a goal. Fortunately, the goal was not counted, but there was no sense of sportsmanship to be seen. Lastly, Vivian Lew (10) was tackled and hit in the face. There was no penalty for Chadwick whatsoever. The dirty game continued. “I was flabbergasted,” said Sanhae Kim, “Chadwick is selfish and their cheating just proved to me that their two years of training did not mean anything.”
Sanhae Kim, the current captain, is determined to improve the team for the better. Her future plan for the team is focusing on kicking and overcoming their fear of the ball. “The girls are afraid of the balls flying towards them and their kicks are not strong enough,” Sanhae Kim responded.
Although their first match was ruined by several disgraceful actions taken by Chadwick, our CDS team is not discouraged. All of the CDS students wish the best for the team and hope that there will be an atmosphere of fair play with Chadwick the next time they meet.

Basketball Team Returns! (Edward J. Suh)
After enjoying a fair amount of rest during winter break, the CDS basketball team has returned to school! They have been intensively training during extracurricular periods and afterschool sessions in order to prepare for the upcoming competitions. Beginning January 24, 2014, our basketball team had friendly matches against three different schools – BIFS, CCS, and BISC – for three consecutive days, excluding Sunday. Those matches allowed each of the school’s teams to get to know their own strength, while playing fairly yet competitively.
For three days, the CDS basketball team tried their best to defeat their three worthy opponents. On the first day, January 24, the basketball team competed against BIFS. The girls tried their best, but were unfortunately defeated by a score of 6 to 16. However, the boys played a close contest and avenged the girls’ defeat by winning the game 33 to 29. Next, on January 25, CCS came and challenged CDS to a basketball match. However, they were no match for the CDS basketball team; they were overwhelmed by both the girls and boys teams by the final scores of 12 to 5 and 53 to 14 respectively. Finally, on January 27, CDS visited BISC to have another match. Both games were outrageously competitive. The girls ended up achieving a tie, scoring 10 to 10. The boys did their best to play BISC closely, but their opponents were too powerful, resulting in a 26 to 57 loss. Despite their losses, CDS team will never lose their strength. During this season the entire school community had been extra supportive, attending not only home games but also away games. With so much show of school spirit, I believe that just like the phoenix mascot that represents the team spirit of our school, our teams will always reincarnate and rise to the top once again. Our team will show the same miracle they were able to present in their previous basketball season in which both teams reached the league final. Let the team create another history that represents the will and power of the CDS Athletic Department. Good Luck! -02/14/2013 (Volume III Issue III) |
2013 Volleyball Tournament (Edward J. Suh)
On the second day of November, the KISAC Volleyball Blue Tournament was held in Chadwick International School. For two months, CDS had played friendly matches against different school teams from CCS, CI, Dwight, and GVCS. In these games, our team won several times, but lost as well. However, CDS had participated in these matches in preparation for the tournament. The CDS team had to face these challenges first in order to become the champion by competing against CI, Dwight, and BISC in the tournament.
KISAC Volleyball Blue Tournament officially started at 10:00 and ended around 17:30. The tournament for boys was held in the Main Gym while the tournament for girls was held in the Auxiliary Gym. Each team played the best of three sets to 25 points, and 15 in the third set. For the boys, four teams were divided into two groups; each team had the chance to play at least once. Then based on the results of the preliminary matches, the play-off matches began.
The volleyball season has come to an end with a big achievement by our team. The undefeated CDS Girls volleyball team triumphed against all three of the opposing teams, placing first in the tournament. The Boys volleyball team, despite having lost several times in the past, ended up winning third place. Although our school does not have much of a varsity team history, this team had shown the most improvement in skill and teamwork among the terms. The coaches are hoping to see the same amount of energy and sportsmanship during the basketball season.

Volleyball Team Assembles (Soo Jin Lee)
Seasons come and seasons go. Like the season’s new greetings, new sports and faces appear. Last year, our school only had basketball to represent us. However, this year, new sports such as volleyball and soccer have emerged; providing CDS students with the opportunities to be more active and to show their true sportsmanship.
On September 3rd and 5th, the first volleyball tryouts were held in CDS; 16 girls and 29 boys tried out in order to get onto this team. The judge was the new teacher, Mr. Thomas, who used to work in a public school in Daegu. The students tried their best and waited for the final callbacks that were to be announced later that week.
The results that everyone had been waiting for came out on September 9th. “The tryout went well. I didn’t know a lot of the students’ names but all the girls tried their best. So we decided to keep all 16 girls who came out for the team,” said Mr. Thomas. It was a lucky day for girls. They were anxious about getting eliminated but all of them got in. However, unfortunately for the boys only 16 out of the 29 were accepted onto the team.
As Mr. Thomas said, “It was very difficult to get the list down to 16 but we made the best decision possible on all the players.”
The goals of the CDS volleyball teams are getting the basic fundamentals down, learning teamwork and having fun. They are planning to have a friendly match against CCS on October 2nd and a game against Chadwick on 5th. Let’s cheer for our first players for their hard work and glory that they will bring to our school.
