There are many diverse clubs in CDS. Some exist to create newspapers and yearbooks for the school, and some have activities ranging from horseback riding to dancing. However, the recently created Robotics Club stands out; and this month, we interviewed the host of this newfound club, Junki Won from 9th grade! Junki definitely has prepared many things to tell us for this month’s interview, including his introduction to robotic engineering and the story behind the creation of the club. Now let’s hear Junki give some of the most interesting answers to our questions!
Q. First of all, Junki, what is the reason behind creating the Robotics Club?
A. I created the club because it seemed that for students in 문과 (majoring in liberal arts) could join MUN to reinforce their college applications, but the 이과 (majoring in STEM) had no good choices. Also, I felt that robotics is very helpful and that it can be used for schoolwork.
Q. How much experience of robotics did you have previously?
A. I started with just playing around crafting at home and started going to an academy in 7th grade. I went to a couple of competitions and won awards.
Q. What activities do you plan to roll out in the near and later future for your members in the Robotics Club?
A. There are three parts in robotics as far as I know: 1. Mechanics 2. Sensors, and 3. Programming. We are currently on the first stage. In the future, we are going to explore sensors and programming. Then the electronics will be our next target. And when we are confident with each components of robotics, we are going to pursue making a robot all together as a club.
Q. Alright, here is your final question: Do you enjoy robotics engineering personally?
A. Yes, I enjoy it a lot, as much as I enjoy playing sports. Robotics is not an easy subject. It requires careful thinking and hard work. But the best part is that once I finish making a robot, I get control over it, and also it is the process of making the robot itself that is rewarding; I learn a lot about techniques for future applications.
