“If you don’t know it, you are a North Korean spy.” This is a phrase widely used to people in Korea who don’t know something that is very famous in the country. People will use this phrase when someone says he or she doesn’t know the drama, “She Was Pretty.” Because of this popular drama, the OSTs are also rising in fame. Particularly, the song “She Doesn’t Know (모르나봐)” is hitting the top of the music charts.
The fact that this song is made with collaboration can be one of the reasons why this song is popular. The singers of the song are Soyu from the girl group SISTAR and a male singer called BrotherSu. People were looking forward to this song even before the song was released because the song was sung by the ‘collaboration queen’ Soyu. Soyu is famous for having many collaborations with male artists. One of the most famous songs that she sang is ‘Some,’ a collaboration with JungGiGo. Because the OST song contains both female and male voices, it helps people focus on Ji Seungjun and Kim Hyejin’s love, the two main characters of the drama, as the singers indirectly represent them in the song. Although BrotherSu is not a famous singer compared to Soyu, people still had high expectations for this OST just by imagining the ‘chemistry’ between Soyu’s and BrotherSu’s voices.
This song is better known to people compared to other ‘She was pretty’ OSTs because of the lyrics that match with the drama. Whenever there are love scenes between Seungjun and Hyejin, this song comes out and heightens the throbbing of the viewers’ hearts. When there is a scene where Seungjun purposely ignores Hyejin and passes her, the song comes out with the lyrics “I was always beside you, I was always staring at you,” which can be explained in Hyejin’s perspective. When Seungjun stares at Hyejin with affection, the song comes out with the lyrics “You don’t seem like a stranger to me,” “You were the one I was looking for,” indicating that Seungjun has feelings for Hyejin.
It is hard to argue that popular OSTs are greatly affected the admired dramas. However, this song proves that to be a favored song, the artists and the lyrics that match with the scenes are also essential parts of the popularity.
