“Go Phoenix!” The first Dalton cheerleaders shouted as they made their home debut during the basketball game against Kent Foreign School. As the girls and boys basketball team strived for victory, the squad hollered for their success. Anyone who has been to a proper basketball game knows that this group of girls is crucial. Several international schools here in South Korea seem to have a genuine cheerleaders, however, CDS has never had any. Regardless of the fact that it is not necessarily an old and experienced school, a new team was called for.
First tryouts of the year were held during the month of November in 2015. The girls were put to the test of both their mental and physical abilities as they were demanded by their coach, Mr. Guo, to push themselves to do several strength-requiring activities. When the time was up, almost all the students were completely fatigued, with sweat pouring down their tomato-red faces. The final results were posted on the window of the high school office surrounded by all the other announcements. Ultimately, out of sixteen girls, twelve made the cut. From the high school wing, the squad currently consists of two freshman, five sophomore, three juniors, and two senior female students.
Now that tryouts were done with, the real training began. All member were required to remain after school for two days each week in order to build muscle, rehearse chants, and most importantly, prepare for the half time performances. In any basketball game, a halftime performance is a show that the cheerleaders will put on together as one. It is comprised of clapping, chanting, dancing, and stunts. This year’s cheerleading team has been absolutely delightful. The girls hope to see many new faces at the tryouts next year for another bright and enjoyable season.
