The 2nd Annual CDS Public Speaking Contest took place on the 23th of January. This contest, which has been going on for two years now, allows students to showcase their abilities in three areas – persuasive speech, dramatic reading, and debate. It is hosted by the social studies department and offers cash prizes to the overall top three winners.
There were many more participants than last year’s event, with around 50 students applying for a chance to display their speaking skills. In the persuasive speech category, students delivered their speeches on a serious topic of interest to a contemporary audience in two rounds. For the dramatic reading event, the competitors were required to read a passage from a novel, short story, or poem in two rounds as well. There were many students who were expressive and conveyed the message of their readings well.
The final category was the debate. The format of the debate was 2x2 Parliamentary. Based on the scores from the persuasive speech and dramatic reading events, teams of two were created by the directors of the tournament. The debaters brought up many good points about topics and also did well in rebutting their opponents’ case.
Awards were given out to the best participant in each category and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes for the overall best performers throughout the three events. There were many great performances throughout the competition, but it was Mark Park (Grade 9) who won overall first place as well as awards in each of the categories. Ruby Noh was 2nd place, while Grace Shin received 3rd.
It seems that the Annual CDS Public speaking contest is gaining popularity with more participants every year. Next year’s contest will probably have an even higher quality of speaking from our very own students at CDS.
