BY YEBIN CHO (11) Finally, after all the waiting, a Jjimjilbang (Korean Spa) is going to open in Cheongna. There have been a lot of requests to have one in Cheongna and they are about to be granted. It is the first Jjimjilbang to open in the city, making the expectations higher. The construction started in March and the first floor was finished in April 1st. Right now they are giving finishing touches to the building that is planned to be open in December 2015. The name of the Jjimjilbang is “Sparex.” It is located in front of Cheongna Lotte Castle main entrance with both Homeplus and Lotte Mart being near, which allows the users to drop by on their way from shopping. Also, the building is right in front of the Lake Park, giving a nice and relaxed view. Other than the nice spot, there are many more features of the building that attract customers. The Jjimjilbang building consists of 11 floors including the rooftop, which already implies that it is more than an ordinary Jjimjilbang. The first two floors have stores that would provide the customers with convenience. The opening of “Dmaris,” a famous family restaurant, in November on the second floor is another attraction point for Sparex. From the third to eighth floor would be the parking lot, which also increases the convenience for the users since they do not have to look for places to park their cars. Finally, from the ninth to eleventh floor is the main Jjimjilbang, and the rooftop is a place for a water park. Sparex will be very appealing because of its convenience and many luxurious features. It would be a nice place to go to relax, and I think it is worth spending some time checking it. BY SOO-YOUNG CHANG (11)
Shelter is undoubtedly one of the most crucial parts of our daily lives, but ironically, we often find ourselves taking our decent shelters for granted. Here is a non-profit organization that is, most certainly, the only exception to the previous statement. Yes, you've guessed it: Habitat For Humanity. For the majority of us, Habitat For Humanity appears and feels as though it has quite a distance away from where we stand; however, a number of Cheongna Dalton School students, ranging from Grade 10 to 12, are seizing the opportunity to correct such misconception. The school's Habitat For Humanity Club was primarily created and initiated for the purpose of giving homeless people and those living in insufficient homes a decent environment to live in. Yihyun Joo from Grade 11, the Vice President of the school's Habitat For Humanity Club, was pleased to give her words about the current situation and upcoming plans of the club. She first began explaining about the usual routines of the club; every member of the club is expected to "volunteer to build and repair houses in places that need much support," and for other times, they would hold a "meeting to plan fundraisers, like the Pepero Day event." In addition, the club members are "assigned to different positions, like administration, filming, and advertisement" for efficiency. "So far, we went to Yongsan to volunteer for Haeorumville, an institution that provides art and music (piano) lessons to little children of young single mothers. We've redone the walls, ceilings, and floors of the building," she said. Yihyun also mentioned the main goals of the club for this term. She stated that "the club will do another monthly volunteer work," and continue to hold events and fundraisers to "gain enough money to support people in need. But most importantly," she added, "we will try to raise awareness of the club and gain support from others." With a heart full of hope, Yihyun wished "the students to actively participate in events organized by the Habitat For Humanity Club.” It is the first year in Habitat For Humanity Club for Yihyun, but she has already experienced and felt the warmth and beauty of volunteer work. "Of course, I'll stay in the club for next year! It is more valuable than I thought it would be," she spoke. Habitat For Humanity Club has a long way to go, but its enthusiasm and willingness to support those in need make the journey seem not so 'long' after all. “Those who are not part of the club can assist people in need by signing up on Habitat For Humanity website (http://www.habitat.org) to volunteer and donate,” said Yihyun, finishing her interview. Our school had a great Halloween party on October 29th, after skipping the party last year due to some dissensions. This year, the Student Council gave their greatest effort to make the Halloween Party fun and memorable to all grades. The party started with everyone getting ready, and hotdogs and drinks were served to fulfill the participants’ hunger. The Student Council members began to take groups of six people to the elevator that led to the haunted house course set up on the fourth floor. Our group was the second group to go, making us all nervous. When we reached the fourth floor, a guide wearing a gruesome mask was standing with a flashlight, giving us the instructions and what we were asked to do. The whole fourth floor was pitch black with only neon tapes on the floor guiding the way, which added to the spooky atmosphere. Our goal in the haunted house was to find three puzzle pieces in three different locations and put them all together in the room located at the far end of the hallway. The ghosts were very intimidating and scary, crawling out from the back, dragging people’s legs from the floor, banging on the windows, and screaming very loudly. I thought our Student Council’s haunted house was far better than the ones that I’ve encountered in amusement parks and was very impressed. The next course was the movie, and we watched Insidious 3 in Dalton Hall, which was suitable to the Halloween theme, filled with jump scares, paranormal activities, and gruesome scenes. It was great, but some students in the hall were fussing too much during the movie. The last part of the Halloween Party was the Halloween dance. The music choices did not meet everyone’s liking, but everyone danced and had fun. The people at the party thought the music choices should have been more fun and easy to dance, rather than having rap songs that not everyone enjoyed. Also, since the Internet was not working at its best condition in the third floor library, it would have been more efficient if they made a long playlist of songs and downloaded them beforehand in order to prevent the music from stopping at random when people were dancing. Overall, the Halloween Party was a huge success that everyone enjoyed and allowed students from different grades to bond. Curious about how the Halloween party was planned out, I asked the members of the Student Council about some difficulties they had. Most of them were just hungry while preparing for the party due to no food getting served for the members. They also noted the lack of supplies provided and the fact that they had to go buy the products. However, due to their hard work and efforts, we were able to enjoy a great Halloween party and all of the students were highly thankful for their dedication. We all hope that the following parties and events will be as great as this one. |
