On the 17th of March, the second annual CDS mathematics competition was held in Dalton Hall. This competition is a friendly yet ambitious contest amongst four separate teams. The winning group, along with all four of its members, receive a prize and has their picture posted on the Dalton high school website. This year, there was an overwhelming amount of responses for the application forms. Many grade year students, ranging from five to twelve, were able to fill out the entry document. All the mathematics teachers from middle school to high school then took each and every single submission into careful consideration, deciding who will compete in the tournament.
The high school teachers who were involved in this entire process, were Mr. Pak, Ms. Han, and Ms. Kim. After putting much thought into who would be selected for the semi final rounds, they finally came down to a concluding settlement. The results were soon announced. On the 15th of March, the contenders met with one another on the third floor of the school's library. Eight teams had been picked out carefully. The groups sat down with each of their four members, and the fight began. After an hour, the four teams with the top scores were publicised, and were given the opportunity to move on to the second and final stage of the games.
Two days later, the closing match was held. The four teams made their way to Dalton Hall, where there was a live audience watching eagerly in their seats. The students used their group work and participation skills in order to communicate with their fellow peers and draw a conclusion to the given math problems. It was a grueling tournament, as the competitors battled their way through the whole round.
After a draining full sixty minutes, the ultimate winner had been determined. The group, “HP7” was crowned the victor. The members included Harry Park (11), Ruby Noh (10), Tammy Lee (8), and Yubin Lim (5). Each individual received their very own speaker as a prize, and walked out of the hall feeling cheerful and satisfied. All and all, the 2016 CDS annual mathematics competition was an incredible success. The math department hopes to see a room full of bright faces and uplifting spirits again next year in order to, once more, carry out a victorious math tournament.
